Why is Mahogany Good for Furniture?

Mahogany is a timeless and beautiful wood that is used time and time again for creating all manner of furnishings. But have you ever stopped to wonder why mahogany is so good for furniture? Or, are you in the process of choosing furniture and deciding whether to use mahogany or not? Here we take a look at some of the best things about the brilliant material that is mahogany.

Beautiful!

Above all, mahogany is prized for its appealing aesthetic and stunning finish. Its beautiful reddish-brown colour tends to darken as time goes on and produces a gorgeous red-toned shine when polished. The colour is natural and oozes charm in any space to provide a high-end appearance.

The traditional appearance of mahogany adds a real air of sophistication to modern or classically styled spaces and, when left with their natural colour, adds an element of warmth to a room.

If you want to make your mahogany pieces slightly more personal, mahogany is a good material for furniture as it is capable of being carved with intricate detail. This means you can make your furnishings entirely unique to you! Another option is to stain your mahogany as it is a material that copes well with this finishing technique.

Practical!

Mahogany is a durable hardwood, which is one of the main reasons it is good for furniture. This means it is solid and stable and much less likely to twist, warp, split or crack over time, unlike furniture made from softwood such as cedar or pine. Whilst mahogany, and hardwoods in general, can sometimes be a slightly more expensive option, it is worth it in the long run as it will last more than a lifetime! Even better, mahogany is resistant to water, damage and decay so will not be easily marked. Unlike other woods, it also absorbs sunlight which makes it fade resistant, so if you are looking for pieces to furnish spaces that will be in contact with direct sunlight then mahogany is a good option.

Its smooth texture and relatively few knots and voids make it a highly desirable material for carpenters as it is easy to work, which is why it is so commonly used for furniture and occasionally musical instruments.

Sustainable!

Finally, mahogany is now widely plantation grown from truly sustainable sources. At AKD Furniture, we recognise the importance of crafting sustainable products in order to protect our planet and we make sure all our mahogany is sourced from sustainable plantations.
